SHEFFIELD Steeldogs will start their regular season on a high, tomorrow.

After winning the ‘War of the Roses’ series against main rivals Manchester Phoenix, they launch their 2012-13 EPL season at Slough Jets.

And on Sunday, at iceSheffield (5.30pm) they host Swindon Wildcats.

Coach Andre Payette says the pre-season triumph should act as a boost in the League. “I think everyone saw that our team is the real deal this year and that we will compete every night.”

Sceptics consigned this season’s team back to the lower reaches of the League after the departure of Ben Bowns and Janis Ozolins, so Steeldogs have much to prove this year. But Sheffield have stood by owner Shane Smith’s ideal of a largely home-grown roster, replacing the departing two imports with ex-Steeler, Derek Campbell and Hull’s Dmitry Rodin.
