Andre Payette has promised Peterborough Phantoms a hugely unpleasant experience when they next play at iceSheffield.

On Sunday, his Sheffield Steeldogs team were battered and outplayed in a 5-2 defeat in Cambridgeshire.

It was the side’s first loss since December 4 - and the manner of the defeat left a nasty taste in Payette’s mouth.

“We have had a great run of form and a good win on Saturday, when we beat Bracknell Bees 6-1,” he said.

“On Sunday, to be fair, our young team got outworked by a team who wanted the game more.

“A lot of my younger players stepped up to the plate in probably one of our roughest games of the season.

“Peterborough came out with a game plan of playing rough and I can’t wait for the next home game when we will see if they answer the bell in Sheffield. I can’t stand an opposition taking liberties with my team and their next visit will be pay-back time,” said the player-coach.

“We have had a fantastic run of games and this was our first loss since early December. Our fans have been great and we have had some good crowds but yesterday’s loss was unacceptable, as the players will find out in training.”

Dogs had been 2-1 up at Peterborough, with Payette and Edgars Bebris scoring.

Phantoms came out fighting again in the third period and trampled on Steeldogs, scoring four goals, the last of which was an empty net.

On Saturday, Dogs took the lead as Pavel Gomeniuk ripped a shot from the blue line. Janis Ozolins scored from a tight angle and Payette led his side to a 3-0 lead. In the third, Ozolins danced through the Bees’ defence before lifting the puck top shelf. Ashley Calvert claimed the fifth goal at 48.37, at which point both teams changed their goalies. Russian born Dimtri Zimozdra faced three shots for Steeldogs. The final goal was scored by Greg Wood.
