Sheffield Steelers unlikely pursuit of a place in the Challenge Cup final ended in defeat at Nottingham Panthers this evening.
Already 5-3 down from the first semi final leg, and with Neil Abel filling in on the bench because of injury to stand-in player coach Steve Goertzen, they conceded a further six in a high scoring encounter.
The first went past Frank Doyle at 4;40, from Matt Ryan.
And the defending cup holders added another through Leigh Salters on 15 minutes.
The middle period offered no respite: Robert Farmer adding a third on the night.
Three minutes later, Eric Werner added to Sheffield’s woes.
Greg Jacina made it 5-0 before some Panthers mockingly applauded one in their own net from Max Lacroix.
It woke Steelers up with the predatory Stefan Meyer making it 10-5 on the night.
Tom Norton and Dustin Kohn then traded goals.
And Lacroix got his second with four minutes left.
