New Steelers law wrangle

STEELERS' owner Bob Phillips may be facing a new legal fight for survival just before the start of the new season.

The liquidator of his failed 2005 company has apparently issued a 'statutory demand' meaning the businessman has 21 days, from its service, to pay the balance of a court judgement the liquidator previously obtained against him.

Phillips has paid around 55,000 already, but now may have to find a further 140,000.

Sheffield accountant David Sutton, a creditor, said: "If he doesn't pay. the liquidator will petition for his bankruptcy. We hope the threat of this will mean that he, or nominally his wife, will sell Steelers quickly and use the funds to pay the liquidator."

It represents another obstacle to the embattled Steelers owner, who has been trying to gain commercial partners in readiness for the new season.

And it comes at a time when players like Jeff Legue and Joey Talbot have publicly expressed their uncertainty about returning.

Legue gives his views in today's Star.
