New Steelers winger to be hit with fans

DEREK CAMPBELL might not have been wanted by champions Coventry Blaze - but he will feel a warm glow of welcome by fans at Sheffield.

So says Steelers' captain Jonathan Phillips, who believes the 30-year-old Canadian left wing will make a big impression on supporters at the Arena.

"He is a really difficult type to play against," said the Welsh winger. "He's a tough power forward, gets his goals and if there is a 50-50 puck to be won in the corner, he will win it. He is quick, will fight with any of the big boys and has grit and determination.

"He might not have the smooth skating and hands of a Jeff Legue but he gets the job done and our fans will like that."

Coventry boss Paul Thompson said that although Campbell had been "interested in coming back" he had decided to dispense with his services.

The player served up 50 points (16+34) in 61 games for Blaze and was sixth highest scorer and their highest penalty minutes tally of 230 minutes. That amount of time in the sin bin made him the fourth most penalised player across the Elite League, behind Brad Voth, Sean McMorrow and Brad Cruikshank.

Campbell was signed by outgoing Steelers' coach Dave Matsos, who said at the time that his arrival along with that of Steve Munn and new power forward Neil Clark meant that this season's Steelers team "won't get pushed around in anyone's rink."

Campbell also had two seasons at Newcastle Vipers and one at Manchester Phoenix.
