SHEFFIELD Steelers earned a seventh successive victory thanks to a sudden death overtime goal at Cardiff Bay last night.

They recovered from two goals down to force the extra five minutes and then snatched the winner. Colt King scored twice to lead Sheffield’s fightback, while Jeff Legue fired the overtime winner.

Steelers stayed calm as they killed a Devils powerplay. The win lifted Steelers to joint second alongside Nottingham Panthers with five games in hand. Ryan Finnerty’s team also have five games in hand on leaders Belfast Giants, whose lead is now seven points.

Devils led 2-0 after the first period, both goals on the powerplay. Mark Richardson (7 mins) and Sam Smith (18-44) were the scorers, while Devils outshot their visitors 11-7.

Player-coach Finnerty seemed to be agitating for a fight, while young Devils defenceman Josh Batch went toe-to-toe with Jason Hewitt seven minutes into the second.

That put Sheffield on the penalty kill and that proved a bonus with King netting shorthanded from Ashley Tait’s assist.

Devils were rocked by the goal, which was the result of sloppy play from Cardiff skaters and a loss of concentration by netminder Stevie Lyle.

Steelers levelled at 2-2 on 52-29 when King hit the target from Tait and Steve Birnstill.

This was the seventh Devils v Steelers clash of the season and Sheffield certainly have the edge.

Steelers arrived in South Wales last night on the back of a six-match winning streak some huge saves, while new defenceman Nick Duff made his UK debut.

Duff was the man in the sin bin when Smith scored his PP, but the import d-man had a decent enough debut.

Period scores (Devils first): 2-0; 0-1 (2-1); 0-1 (2-2); 0-1 (2-3).

Scorers: Devils: Mark Richardson 1+0, Sam Smith 1+0, Ben Davies 0+2, Kenton Smith 0+1, Stuart MacRae 0+1.

Steelers: Colt King 2+0, Jeff Legue 1+0, Ashley Tait 0+2, Steve Birnstill 0+1, Chad Huttell 0+1. Attendance: 1,369.
