SHEFFIELD Steeldogs are riding on the wave of eight consecutive wins.

Last weekend, they won 3-2 in overtime at Bracknell Bees.

Coach Andre Payette said: “This was another testing away game which could have gone either way, but this one went our way and it could be an interesting run to the end of the season.

“Good teams find a way to win and we managed to do that. It was good to see a couple of my young players step up, Andrew Hirst had a great game and Craig Elliott provided a spark with his energy.

“The results over the last 17 games (14 wins) have been a fantastic record for us in the league but we have another very tough weekend coming up as we take on leaders, Guildford Flames on Saturday and then our third-place rivals, Slough Jets, at home on Sunday.”

Steeldogs took the lead in the last minute of the first period in Berkshire.

Payette was the scorer, assisted by Janis Ozolins and Lee Haywood.

Matt Foord’s breakaway resulted in a shorthanded equaliser at 33:15.

Steeldogs retook the league through Hirst at 52:16, assisted by Pavel Gomeniuk.

Unfortunately, a bench minor was incurred during a timeout with a minute left on the clock, followed by a penalty shot being awarded 20 seconds from time after Bowns made a great pad save during a scramble round the net but Morgan was penalised for covering the puck.

Shaun Thompson took the penalty shot and scored to take the game into overtime.

Much to Steeldogs’ jubilation, Stuart Brittle scored a last-gasp winner at 64:37, assisted by Ozolins and Morgan.

Steeldogs defenceman Steve Duncombe was awarded Man of the Match.
