Ice community raises cancer charity cash

ICE hockey enthusiasts and professionals are teaming up to raise £50,000 for Weston Park Hospital's Cancer Appeal.

Campaigners have booked a pad at iceSheffield for August 16 for the 'Sutton Sting Pro-Am 2008' challenge match which will generate cash for the cause.

Teams will consist of professionals and amateurs, all of whom are hoping to attract personal sponsorship.

They all have to receive pledges of 2,000 each to reserve their slot on the roster.

More than 10,000 was pledged before the event was even confirmed, so organisers are confident they will hit their target.

Ian Johnson, chairman of Sutton Sting Junior IHC, said: "With more than 26 amateur players expected to be involved in the game, this could generate a figure well in excess of the 50,000 target - this will be a massive result if we can pull together and achieve what some might think is impossible."

Professionals hoping to be involved include Steelers' Jody Lehman and ex-stars Dion Darling and Chris Szysky.

Scimitars' newly-appointed player -coach, Ron Shudra, will also ice.

Organisers say the money will go in particular to help fund research work into bowel cancer overseen by Dr Paul Hurlstone, at Weston Park.

The team behind the event includes Gary Apsley, a businessman who once tried to buy Steelers.

The 'Disability Sports Events' group is running a charity bike ride from Londonderry to Skegness from Monday 22 to Thursday 25 September stopping at Sheffield on the way. Local schools are getting involved with children cycling a mile.

The target is 10,000 which will go towards the National Junior swimming in Sheffield in March.
