Home rule for Scimitars

SHEFFIELD Scimitars are relying on home-grown talent to propel them up the rankings next season.

Today the club announced it had signed Tom Squires and Arran Strawson, both local skaters.

Squires, an 18-year-old Sheffield born and trained player, is a natural centre man who can also play on the wing.

Last season he played full time with the Academy Under-18's and ENL team, where he was an outstanding point accumulator.

Coach Jon Rowbotham believes Squires has a great nose for the net, but also possesses sound defensive systems and principled awareness.

Rowbotham said "Tom is a highly skilled player with great speed and creativity which will enable him to contribute all over the ice. He recently travelled to Estonia to compete in the U-18 World Championships for Team GB where he played a big part in that teams Gold Medal winning success."

Squires will be no stranger to the EPL as he dressed for Scimitars last season although his ice time was limited.

Of Strawson, a 21-year-old offensive defenceman, Rowbotham says: "He has great vision which enables him to make pinpoint passes, thus creating many offensive opportunities.

"He carries good size and strength which will be welcomed in stamping authority down in the defensive zone and even though he is a natural defensive player he has a bullet of a shot from the blue line creating goal scoring opportunities.

"I am a coach who believes in defence first and when offensive opportunities develop we should take them with open arms. Strawson thoroughly understands the defensive system I use and executes it to a high level each time."
