Former NHL playmaker joins Steelers

PLAYMAKER Rob Globke, who played 46 games in the NHL, is joining Steelers from German team Krefeld Penguins, as their last signing before the start of Saturday's new season.

Sheffield coach Ben Simon said of the 6ft 3ins right wing: "Rob has an outstanding resume, and has the potential to be one of the best players in this league.

"He has experience in European Elite Leagues and has played in the AHL and NHL as well. Knowing him personally, I am excited to add such a high calibre player that also brings quality characteristics off the ice as well. Steelers fans will love him not only for being a tremendous hockey player, but for his off-ice attributes as well" said Simon.

"This addition has made our club even stronger today, and I am excited to get him here in a Steelers' uniform."

The 27-year-old American forward's decision to join was influenced by the offer of a place at the University of Sheffield.

The club's partnership with the University has been a crucial factor in attracting overseas skaters - and, despite some uncertainty about the club's standing in the community after a finanially-difficult Summer, it has clearly retained its links there.

Globke's CV includes 46 games with Florida Panthers (2005-8), several campaigns in the AHL before trying his luck in Europe, first, with Frederikshavn White Hawks of Denmark two seasons ago.

With Krefeld last year, he scored 5+ 7 (12 points in 48 games.) The one time Team USA U18 prospect is described as a player with a hard, accurate shot as well as a long reach? who can play wing or centre. Generally, Globke is assessed as a decent passer and a sound skater.

Steelers, will certainly have an interesting ex NHL element in their side this season, for a change. Coach Simon, 32, played 81 games in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets.
