Finnerty wants ‘hungry’ recruit
Ice Hockey: Latest news, reports and more.
AVAILABLE: A family home for a wilful, young pup.
Sheffield Steelers coach Ryan Finnerty is looking for a boisterous new hockey hound to fill his own position on the roster.
The Star revealed on Tuesday that Finnerty is retiring from the ice at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old Canadian said: “I’m an old man now so there is surely some hungry young pup out there that will come and do my job.
“I have identified my number one target. He is a player who I know and who comes supremely recommended by many people I trust. If we can land this guy the fans won’t remember me on the ice by about the third week in September.
“Being located here also means that I can go and see players in Europe whilst there season is still on. That gives me a huge advantage, rather than just signing a guy from a resume or a recommendation,” said the coach.
“Between now and the end of the season I will make at least two trips to see players in other leagues. It makes commercial sense for me to do that. I’m prepared to do the leg work and chase guys all around Europe if it means we get the right guys at the right price.
“We have key guys back already with the likes of John DeCaro and Matt Stephenson already signed up.”
Steelers have back to back games at Edinburgh Capitals this weekend. Sheffield’s defence must shackle Slovakian Rene Jarolin, the League’s fourth top scorer in all competitions.
The 30-year-old centreman scored twice against them on January 8.
