Deal done, but Koenig makes Steelers wait

TREVOR KOENIG has accepted a deal offered to become goaltender at Sheffield Steelers - but that doesn't mean to say he will ever stop a puck for the club.

Management have offered him what he considers to be an appropriate salary and even worked on his secondary requirement, a job in either teaching or research in Sheffield.

Yet despite meeting his demands, Sheffield have yet to see his signature on contracts.

Players of Koenig's stature - a 15-year pro who has played for a host of top rated AHL and IHL teams - can afford to take his time to make his pick.

The Canadian spent last season with Rodovre Mighty Bulls of Denmark and it is possible they or other clubs in Europe are dangling offers in front of him.

There are several leagues on the continent that leave Britain's Elite League behind when it comes to quality.

So, at 34 years of age, Koenig is clearly weighing up what standard he wants to play in.

The former Coventry Blaze and Newcastle Vipers stopper has had several rounds of talks with Sheffield General Manager Mike O'Connor who commented: "There is no gap in what he is asking or what we are prepared to give him.

"We have met his terms. We have done all the hard work. But there has been no breakthrough which is a pity because in budget terms it is holding a lot of things up."

Steelers, looking to replace Jody Lehman, have also discussed terms with Kevin Reiter, the 27-year-old American who starred for Basingstoke Bison last term. He has not been discounted from the equation.

Whoever gets the netminder contract, they will have Dan Green as a back-up; Steelers are to bring the ex Basingstoke man back for a second term.

Ashley Tait was having fresh talks with Steelers this week.
