Assistant coach Darrell Hay’s return to the ice has underline how much he loves the game - and how much he misses it.

The 35-year-old Canadian appeared to hang the skates up when he was appointed Paul Thompson’s right-hand man at Sheffield Steelers.

But injuries to the roster saw him play at Nottingham Panthers and at home to Braehead Clan, last weekend.

Hay said it was originally mooted that he’d play the previous Wednesday against Edinburgh: “Thommo cut me after a pre-game skate...I was a little heartbroken!

“Then he said I was in Saturday and I started to get a little nervous on Friday night and getting on the bus. I didn’t want him to pull the rug from under me again going in there. I was probably the most nervous I have been for a long time at Nottingham in the pre-game skate.

“I am just happy to help the club. As clichéd as it sounds, it is one of those things, it is in my job requirement if somebody gets hurt, I’ll fill in.

“I miss playing. I’d love to keep playing. Once you get out there it’s in your veins, you always want to compete.

“Behind the bench your hands are kind of tied.

“You prepare all week to put in a game plan. Then you hope it gets executed correctly.

“But when you are out there battling inches away from another guy’s face and you want the same thing, which is to win, there is no better feeling in the world.”

Meanwhile, Steelers’ game at Belfast Giants on Friday has been postponed. A once-postponed One Direction concert was re-scheduled - and there were no other date options available. Saturday’s game at the same venue goes ahead. Steelers are angry about it - as are the 250 fans said to be travelling there. But money talks in the Arena management business.
