SHEFFIELD Steeldogs are through to the final of the EPL Cup after a nailbiting 0-0 tie in the semi final second leg at Milton Keynes Lightning (1-0 agggregate.) They go on to face either Manchester Phoenix or Guildford Flames.
On Thursday, fans watched an absorbing goalless encounter, especially as Andre Payette picked up a penalty in the last 38 seconds to give MK a 6-on-4 man advantage, and with a shot that rang off the post seconds from the end.
The result means it is the first time a Sheffield EPL team has progressed past a semi-final stage. It is a massive achievement for owner, Shane Smith and coach Payette, with their young ‘made in Sheffield’ team and compared to their position at the bottom of the table this time last year.
Owner Shane Smith said: “I am proud of the team, it was complete team effort, especially the defence who were phenomenal.
One of the reasons for the success this season is the guys commitment to their fitness and strength, giving them the edge over teams with a higher level of talent. Also the great team spirit and confidence that has been forged is a major factor in breaking records this year; they have all bought into what we asked of them. The number of fans who travelled and the loud support they gave was awesome.”
