Crack German team target Steelers star
RANDY Dagenais could be on his way to crack German team Schwenninger Wild Wings.
The double-winning Sheffield Steelers' defenceman has been offered a contract by the team that iced Steelers forward Kent Simpson in the DEL in 2001-02.
Dagenais has yet to sign though and will be aware that next week is a crucial one for Sheffield. Club management recognise they have no import goalie and just one overseas defenceman (Scott Basiuk) on their books.
There have been delays in recruitment and re-signing for several reasons - some Steelers players are assessing their options elsewhere while club itself needs to know how much of their wage capped budget they must invest in a new goaltender.
General manager Mike O'Connor - in Budapest today to try and secure the rights to stage a Continental Cup round in Sheffield in October - said he was not worried by the current lull in player activity. "There will be lots happening soon, but for a start we have one key place to fill, the goalies." he said.
"When that is done it will determine the rest. The pieces will fall together.
Steelers have set themselves a target - rather than a firm deadline - of the end of next week to resolve the goaltender issue. While nobody is pressing the panic button, coach Dave Matsos knows that a settled line-up with core players from previous seasons is a fundamental part of any championship winning teams.
With Steve Munn seemingly ruled out of the 2009-10 roster, Steelers are hoping Rod Sarich will turn down an offer from Denmark.
