Any chance Hull had of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup disappeared as Neil Clark of the Steelers hit home the game winner with ten seconds remaining.
The win by Sheffield still keeps their hopes alive of making the semi-finals.
The home side took the honours with the only goal of the first period as Jack Watkins found the net at 12.04.
The visitors were back on level terms early in the second period as Neil Clark converted at 21.37. The Steel men then took the lead with a powerplay goal from Colt King at 34.09.
Into the third period and Stingrays player/coach Sylvain Clouiter had tied the game at two-apiece with a powerplay goal at 55.21.
With the game heading towards the buzzer and with both teams looking to take a point each up stepped Neil Clark with his second of the game at 59.50 to give Steelers both points.
