Stuart MacRae, a former prolific points-scorer and captain at Cardiff Devils, has declined a chance to join his old coach at Sheffield Steelers.
The inspirational centre would have been a second-line replacement for Nate DiCasmirro.
But he has announced his retirement at 31 - as has Tylor Michel, 30, another former Devils’ player who Sheffield coach Gerad Adams had his eye on.
MacRae, a 6ft 2ins Canadian, had three brilliant seasons in Wales before bowing out in his last campaign, at Odense in Denmark. He is now working outside of ice hockey.
Great Britain will play two international games against Poland ahead of the World Championship (Division 1B) next year.
The two will go head-to-head at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham on Thursday 9th April and in Coventry’s Skydome a day later).
