But it was a bumpy ride, at first, last night.
Leading 4-2 from the first leg in Glasgow, they soon found themselves in a mess. They had planned to play tight defensive hockey, and avoid conceding first, knowing that an early reverse would put wind in Clan’s sails. Yet it was man of the match Jordan Krestanovich, moving on to a play from Matt Schepke who made it 1-0 on the night, at 06.21.
That’s not how it was supposed to be and Steelers, who lost to Edinburgh last weekend, couldn’t change it before the first break, despite 15 shots on Daren Machesney. A firm team talk was required. But that didn’t stop Ash Goldie scoring for Clan one minute into the second session.
Steelers outshot Clan 16-6 in that period though and wrestled control of the game back when Jonathan Phillips scored from Simon Ferguson.
Slapshot Scotland tweeted that the last session was ‘The biggest 20 minutes of Braehead’s season’ - and it was much the same for Steelers.
Their Brits took over on the score sheet, Lee Esders scoring from a Jason Hewitt assist at 52:59 before Ashley Tait had the final say, on the Power Play at 54:04. The irrepressible Tylor Michel added another, short handed, with an assist going to goalie John DeCaro for an aggregate 8-4 win.
The Final against Nottingham will be a two legged affair.
