Sheffield Steeldogs may have stolen a march on their Elite League neighbours Steelers.
The EPL semi-pro side has organised a ‘Yorkshire Cup’ match with Elite League Hull Stingrays on August 30 at iceSheffield- a game Steelers used to take part in. And Dogs, who have orchestrated a closer relationship with Hull than they have with Steelers, have also agreed to sending their talented GB goalie Ben Bowns on a two-way deal with Stingrays.
Hull have two goalies - but have given Bowns the chance to ice for them when Dogs aren’t playing. That will include playing against Coventry Blaze and a Danish team in a pre-season tournament.
It begs the question, in some fans’ minds, why Steelers haven’t made a similar move for the 20-year-old from Swinton, Rotherham. Dogs’ coach Andre Payette said: “Ben is fast becoming as good as Elite League imports. We will lose him at some stage, but for now his main responsibility is Steeldogs - he can train and play for Hull when we’re not playing.”
