Sheffield Steelers were desperate to get some pride back tonight.

Saturday’s disastrous defeat at Coventry led to a stern rebuke from coach Gerad Adams. And a demand for more effort at Belfast Giants, this evening.

However, after a goalless first period, they conceded two quick goals, from Mike Kompon and Ray Sawada.

Mike Forney got one back on the power play though.

And the sides were on level terms before the second break, Jonathan Phiilips scoring before d-man Cullen Eddy added another for the South Yorkshire club.

It was quite a turnaround, with Sheffield taking a 3-2 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.

With 31 seconds left Kompon equalised with his second of the evening.

The same player scored on the penalty shootout, as did Evan Cheverie to ensure maximum points for the Irish, Steelers missed their two shots and had to be content with a single regulation time point.

SATURDAY REPORT

Coventry Blaze 6 Sheffield Steelers 2

Sheffield Steelers paid the price for a horrific 5-0 middle period last night.

They were overwhelmed by Coventry Blaze in the second session.

And the eventual loss saw them fall of the top of the table.

Braehead are back in first position, a point ahead.

Steelers had gone ahead through British winger Rob Dowd, on the Power Play at 18:09, assisted by Tyler Mosienko.

But after that horrendous middle period, ex Steelers skipper Steve Goertzen added a Blaze sixth at 48:13.

Michael Forney got one back at 53:26 - but it was a night of massive disappointment for the travelling Steeler fans.

Coach Gerad Adams now has to re-build the team before Sunday’s trip to Belfast - or lose four points in the title chase. He needs to work on what he calls team “softness” near Frank Doyle’s goal.

Attendance: 2,349.

*Elite League leaders Braehead Clan racked up their 13th victory of the season by beating Cardiff Devils 7-3.

Es Steeler Stefan Meyer and Scott Pitt both scored twice as the Clan made it two wins in a row.
