Arena contract on ice

Sheffield Steelers have yet to sign an agreement for ice time at the Arena for the season which starts with a home game in 34 days time. Recently, owner Bob Phillips admitted the club's relationship with their landlords was "not great".

Phillips, who has declined two offers to sell the club, said: "We went in to sign the agreement but they are putting it off for the moment, they are aware of a possible sale and don't want to contract somebody who is not the owner of the club."

Andrew Snelling, deputy chief executive of Sheffield International Venues said: "We are continuing to liaise with Steelers representatives in respect of the Arena and have issued a new contract for Mr Phillips to sign. We are hopeful of resolving the issues and are looking forward to an exciting and successful season for the Steelers."

Meanwhile, a business consortium looking to buy the club say they "continue to monitor the situation closely and have noted the decision of Phillips to step down as chairman last Friday".

A spokesman said: "We are still interested in taking over and are ready to talk at any time. In fact, we'd want to take over as soon as possible and are in regular contact with the league. Our consortium is growing in strength and number."

That could be a reference to pop writer Eliot Kennedy, who revealed in The Star last week that he is ready to help.

Recently-installed player coach Ben Simon is certainly not panicking after his new boss, Phillips stepped down.

"This is nothing more than a simple move to better protect the club. I remain fully confident, and I am operating business as usual.I have got further agreements and commmitments from more players, and believe that better days lie ahead," he said.
