STEELDOGS player coach Andre Payette has paid tribute to the bravery of his young players who are prepared to trade fists with bigger, more experienced opponents.

His side beat Swindon Wildcats twice last weekend, 4-3 away after penalty shots and a 4-2 win at iceSheffield.

Payette said: “Those were some of the best performances of the season. The guys played their hearts out and with a lot of them carrying injuries they battled well. The atmosphere was awesome at home when Swindon tried to take it to us physically. “It was great to see the young players drop their gloves and stand up for their team mates. That kind of effort really bodes well for the coming battle with Peterborough on Saturday and Milton Keynes on February 8. Every player on the team contributed well.”

Janis Ozolins was the star in the road win, he scored a hat-trick in a game which saw Payette ejected.

The match-defining defining penalty shot was tucked away by Greg Wood

The following night was a treat for fans who like fighting, with a couple of brawls breaking out.

Ashley Calvert put dogs ahead and Ozolins added a second.

Chris Sykes cancelled out a Swindon goal to make it 3-1. And although the visitors got another the game was put beyond their reach when Andrew Hirst scored on the power play.

Steeldogs are now fourth in the league but with only two points separating teams in second down to fifth.
