Ice Hockey: Steelers boss wants old pal as new coach

STEELERS' owner Bob Phillips is turning to one time Cardiff Devils' compatriot Troy Walkington as a possible new Sheffield coach.

With Steve Munn turning him down this week, Phillips needs to find someone to run the 2010-11 team, and help him with some administrative tasks as he attempts to sell the club.

Walkington, the former Cardiff, Peterborough Pirates, Romford Raiders and Basingstoke coach, is on his list of possibles, The Star understands.

At 43, the Canadian has two decades experience. At the moment though, he is an estate agent in Saskatchewan.

A consortium hoping to acquire Steelers off Phillips has lined up a former NHL, AHL and Major Junior coach to take over from Dave Matsos, who quit alongside Mike O'Connor and Dave Simms. That must be an issue for Walkington to consider.

Meanwhile, Steelers players met Phillips for the first time yesterday since the crash of the club's operating company and the walk-out of his management.

Jonathan Phillips and Ashley Tait met him to find out what the current state of play was over the sale.

They wanted assurances about the season-long security of a club which currently sees many of its fans at war with its owner.

Meanwhile, it's thought that Phillips' firm R M Sports Entertainment Ltd, set up in February 2008, will be the latest company to manage Steelers, until its sale.
