Hume boost as Reds fail in player bid
BARNSLEY have failed in a bid to sign Glasgow Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam, manager Simon Davey has confirmed.
Davey, who has learned that injured striker Iain Hume should be declared fit for pre-season training, was impressed by the former Scotland international's performances on loan at Blackpool last term.
But with officials at Ibrox turning down his initial approach, Davey does not expect to submit an improved offer.
"He did very well at Blackpool, played very well against us," he said. "What he would bring to the squad is a winning mentality.
"They turned the bid down and there's a price we won't go over so we have to find the right price."
Adam is now expected to hold further talks with Ian Holloway - Tony Parkes' successor at Bloomfield Road - about his future after failing to win assurances from the newly crowned Scottish champions.
Barnsley's interest, however, underlines Davey's determination to overhaul Oakwell's squad following his well publicised inquest into results with owner Patrick Cryne.
News that Hume, whose absence Davey cited as one of the major reasons behind Barnsley's disappointing form, is targeting a July return could alleviate the need to capture a new forward. The 25-year-old has not played since fracturing his skull in November.
