Miss Macnamara should not be discounted in the Barries Ices And Refreshments Handicap at Catterick.

Martin Todhunter’s five-year-old must shoulder top weight in this seven-runner affair, but she enjoys competing at the North Yorkshire circuit and will, crucially, appreciate the return to just shy of two miles.

Miss Macnamara is a three-times course and distance scorer but hardly ripped up too many trees earlier this month at Carlisle, when she finished fifth of 15 runners in an extended handicap over a mile and three furlongs.

The Dylan Thomas mare is unquestionably better over marathon trips, however, so that run is probably of little consequence when it comes to assessing her chances back at Catterick.

Todhunter’s representative is pretty flexible in terms of ground preference, which is always a handy trait given the capricious nature of late summer, while she is now just 2lb higher than when readily victorious at this track on May 24.

Runaway Musselburgh scorer Giovanni Jack is respected under a 6lb penalty, but Miss Macnamara’s course expertise is taken to once again come to the fore.

Chinese Jade deserves to be recognised as a main protagonist for the Watch RacingUK Sky 432 Handicap at Carlisle.

Sir Mark Prescott’s filly failed to convince over a mile and a quarter at Bath last time, when she scraped home for second place behind Serena Grae, having earlier in the race looked a big danger.

It is, then, hardly a big shock to see the daughter of Cape Cross revert to seven furlongs at the Cumbria circuit.

Chinese Jade won handsomely over this trip at Brighton and at Newmarket last year and is not badly that treated at the weights if this drop in distance has the desired effect, as is anticipated.
