Racing: Wednesday preview

Christophermarlowe can put himself in line for a tilt at Classic glory by writing a successful chapter in the Investec Derby Trial at Epsom on Wednesday.

The John Gosden-trained colt has several lofty entries, not least in the biggest three-year-old Flat race of them all, and faces four rivals on the back of perfect juvenile record.

After making a winning debut at Sandown in September, his only other appearance interestingly came on this specialist track two weeks later.

Christophermarlowe may have beaten little of note in a four-runner affair, but he did it easily enough and gained crucial experience of the unique undulations.

Gosden has won this race twice in the past 10 years and this colt, jointly owned by his wife Rachel Hood and Michael Tabor, can now take the prize though he has to give 2lb to the opposition.

What About Carlo is another previous course winner who can put that to good use in the Investec City And Suburban Handicap.

Eve Johnson Houghton’s charge won a competitive handicap over the course and distance on Derby day last June and looked to be coming to the boil when fourth in the Lincoln at Doncaster last month.

Predictably, he found the mile a shade too short and was putting in his best work at the finish.

A return to 10 furlongs is sure to suit the four-year-old.
