Explosive Lady can live up to her name by surging to victory in the feature event at Newbury.

Trained in Middleham by the eminently capable Karl Burke, this well-built filly made quite a splash at Ascot last month, when third in the Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes.

That run confirmed her undiluted promise, and she could feasibly find the Listed Bathwick Tyres St Hugh’s Stakes a natural stepping stone towards bigger targets.

Explosive Lady was earmarked as a horse to follow at Nottingham in July, when she trounced a good-looking field by upwards of eight lengths on her debut over five five furlongs.

Better was to come later that month on the King George card at Ascot.

The daughter of freshman sire Alfred Nobel was held up by Martin Harley before trouble ensued two furlongs out, at which stage her jockey had to shuffle into the clear for a run.

Despite hanging to her right late on - a trait connections insist was naivety, rather than anything untoward - she responded really purposefully to get to within three and a half lengths of Osaila.

With the winner having already been earmarked as Guineas horse and runner-up Pastoral Girl due to run in the Lowther next week, the form should continue to be handsomely advertised throughout the rest of the season.

Moreover, the ground at Ascot was not too fast that afternoon, so even if there is further rain in Berkshire that should not knock her too severely off her stride.

In light of her Nottingham cakewalk, the decision to revert to five furlongs should not be an issue, either.

On-song sprinter Perfect Words must be followed in the Handicap back at Catterick, with Above The Rest, a slightly unfortunate third at Kempton, nicely poised for victory in the Watch Racing UK Anywhere Maiden Stakes at Nottingham.
