Royal Signaller is a tentative pick to land the feature totepool Musselburgh Gold Cup at the Edinburgh track.

The five-year-old is in the right hands with Mick Appleby and there was plenty of encouragement to be taken from his first start for his yard at Wolverhampton last month.

Sent off at 3-1 the Dylan Thomas gelding was a bit keen for his own good in the early stages and paid the price late on as he tired, eventually beaten just under nine lengths behind winner Lycidas.

But that was his first run since September 2013, meaning he was well entitled to feel the pace at the business end and the outing is highly likely to have brought him on, both physically and mentally.

Royal Signaller has few miles on the clock for a horse of his age, and it is entirely feasible that he can come forward for that now Appleby has got to grips with him.

The handicapper has dropped him a pound, and while this is a step up in class he is worth the chance.

It looks interesting Jim Goldie reverts to the level with Silver Duke in the totequadpot Four Places In Four Races Handicap.

The four-year-old won very easily over hurdles at this track in February, in arguably a career-best effort and if he is able to carry that improvement to his performances on the Flat then a mark of 70 should get him firmly involved at a course he clearly likes.

Tommy Docc should be followed in the mytotepool.com Handicap.

The Keith Dalgleish-trained three-year-old showed the benefit of a gelding operation when winning recently at Southwell, in the end being a ready four lengths on top having stayed on strongly when the penny dropped.

That was over five furlongs and the way he finished his race strongly suggests there should be better still to come from him now he tries seven furlongs for the first time.
