Hors De Combat must surely go jolly close in the Front Events Foundation Stakes at Goodwood.

Supporting James Fanshawe’s four-year-old should really come with a health warning as his last-gasp style of running can make for difficult viewing.

But when things click and he gets the breaks at the right time, Hors De Combat has proven he is well up to Listed class at least.

The Mount Nelson colt has been campaigned in Group company on his last four outings this term, and he has not let Fanshawe down.

He was only beaten five and a half lengths in the Lockinge, and was hardly disgraced in either the Criterion at Newmarket and the Summer Mile at Ascot.

Next up was a trip to Haydock for the Group Three Superior Mile in which was unlucky to finish only third behind Balty Boys.

Hors De Combat had his path blocked on the far rail before he flashed home to finish just three lengths in arrears of the winner.

That run was particularly important with this race in mind as it confirmed his aptitude to handle cut in the ground.

He has also gone well at Goodwood in the past, finishing just a neck behind Wannabe Yours in a Group Three last summer.

Hors De Combat, interestingly, steps up in trip by one and a half furlongs back in West Sussex but it appears a calculated risk from what we have seen of him so far.

Windforpower could be allowed to go off unnoticed for the Weatherbys Bank Foreign Exchange Handicap at Redcar.

Tracy Waggott’s five-year-old has struggled since he won by a neck at Wetherby in June, but he is now running off the same mark as when he was last successful.

He might have been out of sight on his last spin at Beverley but a wide draw in stall 10 meant he was always up against it. Windforpower also meets the winner that day, Keep It Dark, on much more favourable terms.
