Racing preview for Thursday May 19

The Warrior should have exactly what it takes to win a nice prize at Goodwood.

Pulborough trainer Amanda Perrett loves a winner at her local track perhaps more than anyone in the land, and looks to have a likely sort in his former Ballydoyle inmate.

The Warrior, a four-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, never quite kicked on for Aidan O’Brien, despite having won the oft-informative Big Bad Bob Maiden at the Curragh last March.

Now under the capable stewardship of Perrett, a race like the seven-furlong winnerevents.com Stakes is surely well within his compass.

Not a lot was probably expected of him in the Victoria Cup at Ascot a fortnight ago - hence his 20-1 starting price - but he ran much better than his eighth-placed finish might suggest.

He was, after all, only beaten three lengths by Flash Fire, with few runners in the 26-strong field finishing faster than Perrett’s representative.

Happily for his connections, the handicapper was nonplussed by that run and has removed another 1lb ahead of his latest assignment.

Having once been rated 106 during his days in Ireland, he could feasibly be very well treated in a race his trainer won back in 2013. wJust as important is the fact Ryan Moore is back on board, while the forecast rain cannot be viewed upon as a negative as the ground was heavy when he won at the Curragh last spring.

Mick Channon’s team remain in super health, so now is not the time to abandon Fitzwilly, who runs in the Construction Day Stakes.

The six-year-old stayer won this two-mile affair 12 months ago and though he is now much higher in the weights, his comeback run at Bath bodes very well with this in mind.

Having his first outing since a spin over hurdles in November, Fitzwilly finished third, beaten just half a length, but this represents a terrific opportunity to gain imminent atonement.
