tomorrow’s third day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is set to be a fantastic spectacle.
Having seen legends galore grace the course on Wednesday and with many a fine filly strutting their stuff today on Ladies Day, there’s a superb contest in prospect for tomorrow’s Stobart Doncaster Cup Day, which boasts a thrilling seven-race card featuring three Group Two contests. And that’s all before the oldest classic horse race in the world on Saturday.
The £100,000 Stobart Doncaster Cup (2.25pm) has a field of strong runners headed by Mahmood Al Zarooni’s Opinion Poll. Ridden to victory last time out at York by Frankie Dettori, he put one over a number of rivals in this race there and will be well fancied. However he came up short in last year’s Doncaster Cup despite favouritism, and was fourth with two of this year’s runners, Tastahil and Motrice in between him and race winner Samuel, so will be in search of an extra gear this time around.
Of those who contested the prize last time out, Motrice could well be the one to threaten, but others wait in the wings, most notably The Queen’s Tactician and the Mark Johnson trained Fox Hunt.
The remaining pair of Group Two contests are both for juveniles, with the opening £70,000 Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes (1.25pm) attracting 10 runners and the £70,000 Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes (3.00pm) eight runners.
The Flying Childers Stakes features the fastest two-year-olds around and a horse being targeted at the contest is the David Wachman-trained Requinto, one of three Irish-trained entries. The son of Dansili won twice over five furlongs in Ireland, including a Listed contest at Tipperary, before taking the Group Three Molecomb Stakes, also run over at five furlongs, at Goodwood on July 26. Last time out, he was pitched in against older opposition in the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes over five furlongs at York on August 19, but was unable to get competitive and finished 13th of the 15 runners.
Several exciting fillies feature among the 11 entries for the £70,000 Group Two Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes (3.00pm, one mile) including Samitar, successful in the Group Three Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot for trainer Mick Channon.
