Last Friday John Ferguson’s Mijhaar was the most impressive winner of the day on the first jumps meeting of the winter at Doncaster.
Mijhaar is rated 105 on the Flat which entitles him to be a very decent hurdler, and he certainly has taken to his new discipline, jumping as though he had done it all his life and cruising away from his rivals up the home straight in the hands of Denis O’Regan.
It’ll be fascinating to see where he goes next. He may be a topic of discussion at Cheltenham Preview Evenings for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
There were two other very impressive winners on the day, Off The Ground and Portway Flyer, with the pair both running their respective fields ragged, continuing the hot streaks of trainers Emma Lavelle and Ian Williams.
The opening race of the day looked like it may be fought out by Paul Nicholls’s Funny Star and Nicky Henderson’s Ericht, and that theory was proved spot-on as the former won for the first time on these shores when fending off the terrier-like Ericht by half a length. Both should be winning again through the season.
Powerstown Dreams prevailed by a short head in the closing bumper, with Paul Bohan’s mount clinging on from another Nicky Henderson runner, Hunters Hoof, ridden by amateur Freddy Mitchell, who pulled clear of the rest.
