SHEFFIELD United and Sheffield Wednesday were forced to battle the elements as well as each other at a windswept Shirecliffe yesterday afternoon.

Goals from Jarrod Kyle and Callum McFadzean ensured the Steel City’s ‘mini derby’ ended with honours even despite both teams’ best efforts to force a win.

Kyle fired a physically intimidating Wednesday side into a deserved lead after six minutes before McFadzean, playing four days after helping the hosts’ qualify for the third round of the FA Youth Cup, dragged United level after half an hour.

Danny Deakin and Wednesday’s Cecil Nyoni both traded chances but, with conditions rapidly deteriorating, it was no surprise to see the first meeting between the two clubs at academy level this season finish all square.
