England relinquished their top-flight status despite beating Spain 3-2 in their final match at the European Indoor Championships in Leipzig, Germany today.
Needing a handsome victory and other results to go their way, England fell short.
They managed a last-gasp winner through Nick Catlin but must prepare for Championship II in 2014.
Spain went ahead after nine minutes through Juan Lainz, but England were level almost immediately as the prolific Ashley Jackson struck.
Jorge Rodriguez restored Spain’s lead in the 34th minute and it looked to be a winner.
But in the 38th minute Jackson grabbed a leveller with his second goal of the game, and two minutes later Catlin pounced to deliver an English victory.
