Hewitt still harsh on himself despite glory

JASON Hewitt shared the limelight in Sheffield Steelers' double-winning glory as one of the most consistent and improved players on the roster.

But Hewitt is a harsh appraiser of his own contribution - and felt he didn't get everything right.

The Brit-pack winger scored 10 goals and 13 assists (23 points) in 62 games, which failed to meet his own target.

"I had hoped for 30 points so I was short by seven" he says.

"I didn't accomplish everything that I set out for which is disappointing but on the other hand I wanted to get in the Great Britain senior team and I did that.

"Overall, ofcourse it was a great year.

"My role as a player was to grind away but next year I want to come back fitter in the hope that will bring me more points as well as grinding away.

"It is a game of inches and the fitter I can get the more chance I have of improving my haul."

Hewitt is working with a personal trainer to strengthen his lower body.

"I feel I am a quick skater but I'd like to go faster."

Hewitt would also like to see his pal and linemate Mark Thomas come back as a more aggressive defenceman.

"He has always had the height but now he's filled out quite a bit. He used to fight when he had all those big lads on his team at London Racers, (the likes of Dennis Maxwell, Jeremy Cornish and Eric Cairns) so let's see him go at it this year!"
