The countdown is on for the 2017 World Masters Speed Skating Championships at IceSheffield next week. Eight individuals from Sheffield’s Speed Skating Club have qualified for the third annual event, and are ready for what will be a competitive, but fun and friendly games.
The Championships have never been bigger, with professional skaters from all over the globe participating. An enormous 92 competitors have qualified for the event; varying from 14 different countries; and ranging from 10 different age categories.
Sheffield’s male competitors include Frazer Wright (35-39 age group), Gregg Elliot (40-44), Keith Wright and Nigel Winstanley (55-59), David Wood (65-69), and Michael Odea (70-74). And female competitors from our area are Fiona Harrison (20-34), and Shannon Gray-Buffey (35-39).
Age groups 30, 35, 40, and 45, for both male and female participants will compete over the distances: 1500m, 1000m, 500m and a super final. Whilst, age groups 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and over, for both male and female participants will compete over the distances: 1000m, 777m, 500m and a super final.
This will be the first time Great Britian has held the Masters World Championships, with previous holders being U.S.A and Canada. Sheffield will be able to build on the games’ success as this years games will be hosted at the ICE Sheffield arena.
Registration for will be available from 2pm on Wednesday 5th April and again on Thursday before 9am.
The games are on April 6&7, Thursday (9-5) and Friday (10-4) with the awards ceremony closing banquet at 7:30pm.
