We are on a winner - Star Grass Roots is landed her first victory.

Our pup is quickly becoming the greyhound to watch.

She won by a neck in her A7 grade after considerable improvement throughout the past week.

Her time of 30.33 at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, was a personal best.

Dave Perry, Owlerton general manager, said: “Everyone at the stadium is delighted for Star Grass Roots getting her first win.

“She ran an identical sectional time from last week which indicates that she will now continue in the 500m trip. Star Grass Roots is becoming stronger each week as she gets older.

“Hopefully she will now continue to progress and win the grade of A6 in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Owlerton welcomed more than 50 Irish greyhounds for one of the nation’s most popular auctions. Dogs travelled to the stadium to demonstrate their pedigree status with hopes of setting their fastest track times.

On Sunday, the greyhounds began their trials at 11am in a bid to attract the most coveted sales price.

Dave added: ‘We enjoy being one of only five venues across the country which hosts greyhound auctions. Trainers and owners both locally and nationally visit Sheffield for the auctions here twice a year.

“Like horse racing, greyhound buyers make their purchases in guineas. Each guinea equates to £1.05. Owlertons’ stadium record price currently stands at 7,500 guineas for a greyhound!”
