YOUNG Sheffield golfer Matthew Fitpatrick has added another national title to his growing list of successes.
Already British Boys’ Champion, the 18-year-old from Hallamshire Golf Club has won the prestigious Daily Telegraph Junior Championship featuring a dozen top junior players.
Although distracted by the need to concentrate on his A-levels at Tapton School, Matthew was able to clear his mind to produce some excellent golf at the new Close House GC course in Northumberland in the 54-hole final.
A first round 73 saw him trail by two strokes but then he had a stunning three under par 68, the competition’s best round, which carried him into a three stroke lead ready for the final round.
There, in drizzling conditions, he posted a 74 to finish two over for the tournament on 215 but with a huge winning margin of seven strokes over the runner-up.
“I’m thrilled and it closes a great year for me,” he said.
