HOME course knowledge was made to pay off by Renishaw Park GC’s quartet as they won the Sheffield Union of Golf Club’s Team Championship, romping home by a massive 18 shots with Wath GC in second place.
They also had the player with the best round of the day in 17-year-old Joe Dean and he took the individual honours for the best overall score, his two-round 142 equalled by Rotherham GC’s David Booth but Dean’s better second round saw him come out top.
Played over 36 holes, this premier team event in the Sheffield Union calendar had 18 teams of four with all scores to count.
Renishaw proved simply unstoppable on the day with Dean’s 142 followed by John Simpkin with 143, 2010 club captain David Briggs on 147 and Karl Baker 150.
Dean’s second round score of three under par 68 was unmatched by any of the other 71 competitors. Individual runner-up Booth and Dean’s Renishaw teammate John Simpkin were the only other two to get under 70, both shooting 69. The only other player to better the par 71 was Wath’s Mike Hammond with a 70.
After Dean, Booth and Simpkin the next best were 146 from Hillsborough’s Shaun Tarplett and Phoenix’s Mike Harrison.
Wath’s quartet was Mike Hammond, Neil Stones, Ian Clarke and Gary Fulwood. Third were Rotherham GC (605), fourth Bondhay (609), fifth Sickleholme (614) and sixth Phoenix (617).
