Sheffield’s US Amateur champion Matt Fitzpatrick will lead the Great Britain & Ireland team in the Walker Cup this weekend.

The 18-year-old Hallamshire Golf Club member is making his debut in the biennial match against the USA at the National Golf Links of America, Southampton, New York.

Fitzpatrick, who will begin a golf scholarship at Northwestern University in Chicago after the Walker Cup, has had a busy summer.

He qualified for The Open at Muirfield and won the Silver Medal for finishing as the leading amateur.

And then backed that up with a runners-up spot at the English Amateur championship before making history over The Country Club course at Brookline in Massachusetts, by becoming the first English winner of the US Amateur title since Harold Hilton in 1911.

Fitzpatrick will partner Neil Raymond in the opening morning’s foursomes against Jordan Niebrugge and Nathan Smith.
