Sheffield golfer Danny Willett has missed out on making the US Open in agonising fashion.
He was involved in a six-man play-off for four remaining places but was one of the two who failed to make it.
There were 14 spots available in all at the International Sectional qualifier staged at Walton Heath in Surrey and Willett was one of half-a-dozen who tied for the final place on 140, four under par.
He shot two rounds of 70, the second one in tough, rainy conditions but then failed in the Play-off to get one of the four places at Pinehurst, North Carolina next month.
Sheffield will be represented there by Hallamshire’s Matt Fitzpatrick, his final tournament before he turns pro.
He automatically qualified for Pinehurst by winning the US Amateur championship last year.
