It’s been an experience like no other for Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick and will have whetted his appetite for more.
The 19-year-old was able to reflect over the weekend on his time at Augusta and the US Masters where he agonisingly missed the cut by one stroke.
Invited to take part after last year’s US Amateur victory, Fitzpatrick showed he wasn’t overawed and had a 12 foot putt on the final green on Friday to make the cut - and it slid past.
“I hadn’t a clue of the significance of that putt at the time.” he said. “To have made the final two days would have been real special.
“But it has been a great experience and you don’t play courses like that every day.
“Hopefully I can improve over the next year or two.”
He has been invited to the PGA Tour event at Hilton Head this week then plans a holiday before the US Open.
He intends staying amateur and wants to play the 2015 Walker Cup but says he will see how things go.
