Matt Fitzpatrick has stormed into the quarter-finals of the English Amateur Championship after two impressive victories yesterday.
Through also is Rotherham GC’s Dominic Moon but the two other local golfers went out.
In the second round (the last 32) yesterday morning, Fitzpatrick convincingly saw off Richard Mansell 5&4.
Then, in the afternoon, it was back out on the course at Frilford Heath at Abingdon and the Hallamshire GC youngster blew away Huddersfield’s Jamie Bower from Meltham GC with some excellent golf, winning 7&5.
In today’s quarter-final, he faces Woodhall Spa’s Nathan Kimsey who is a full international and was a beaten semi-finalist last year. The semi-finals are in the afternoon with the 36 hole final tomorrow.
Moon had a fine 3&1 win in the last 32 against Ashley Watkins then had a tight tussle in the afternoon with Andrew Devonport before winning by one hole to move into the last eight.
There was morning success for Lindrick’s Joe Dean when he beat England international Jamie Rutherford 3&2. In the afternoon, he was all square after 18 with North Yorkshire’s Chris Halley before losing on the 20th.
Jonathan Thomson (Lindrick) lost 5&4 to Nick Marsh (Huddersfield) in the last 32.
