Young Sheffield golfer Matthew Fitzpatrick, the leading amateur at the Open Championship, is through to the last 32 of the English Amateur Championship.
He is also joined by other young hopefuls from the region after two rounds of qualifying and then yesterday’s first round of Matchplay at Frilford Heath.
Fitzpatrick qualified eighth from the two rounds of strokeplay with a six under 138 (67, 71), the leaderboard topped by Jonathan Thomson of Lindrick at 135, nine under.
Other qualifiers from this area included Lindrick pair Dan Wasteney, 138, and Joe Dean, 141, and Rotherham GC’s Dominic Moon, 142.
Fitzpatrick then beat Ben Wall (Hayling GC) 2&1 and Thomson beat Sam Brown (Bedale GC) 3&2. Also through are Dean (3&1 winner over Doug keddie) and Moon, one hole winner over Jon Gray. However, Wasteney went out, losing 3&2 to Paul Lockwood (Hessle GC).
The last 32 and last 16 rounds are today. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are tomorrow then Saturday’s 36 hole final on the course near Abingdon.
