Danny Willett produced a microcosm of his season yesterday after a one-over-par first round of the Welsh Open.
The Sheffield man was level par after the front nine with a double bogey (6th) spoiling birdies on the third and fifth.
And he looked to be making ground with birdies on the 11th and 12th. That was until a poor couple of holes saw Willett bogey and double bogey the next two.
A birdie in the par four 14th got the 26 year old back on track, but another bogey on the 17th prevented a level par finish.
Dutchman Joost Luiten leads the way on 6-under.
Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick finished his first round in the Challenge Tour’s Kazakhstan Open with a two under 70, with a birdie in the par five sixth the highlight of his afternoon.
