Yorkshire Seniors, with five Sheffield Union of Golf Club players in the 12-man team, boosted their chances of a first Northern Counties Championship title since 2020, with an 11 points to seven win over Lancashire.

Yorkshire had Lindrick’s trio of Daniel Wasteney, Joe Dean and Jonathan Thomson representing them along with Ben Brewster from Bawtry and Jamie Harrison from Rotherham in the match at Selby Golf Club.

In the morning foursomes, Dean and Thomson overcame their Lancashire opponents by 3&1, Wasteney won his game by 3&2 in partnership with Jamie Bower from Meltham GC and Brewster and Martin Brown from Pike Hills GC, York triumphed by 1up.

Going into lunch with a healthy lead of 4.5 points to 1.5 points, Yorkshire’s were full of optimism for the afternoon singles with the prospect of a first win over Lancashire in this fixture since 2011.

In the afternoon, lead-off man Wasteney made short work of his opponent Mark Young (Longridge GC) by 6&4 to maintain his 100 per cent winning record on the day as did Brewster with another fine 2&1victory. Jonathan Thomson also played a significant part in the singles tussle when he managed to fight back from being one down on the 18th tee to Ciaran Doherty from Bury GC to record a valuable half point for his county.

Yorkshire’s next match is away to Cumbria at Workington Golf Club while Lancashire take on Durham at Preston Golf Club.
