PRESIDENT Trevor Slack praised Sheffield’s golfers after a magnificent double which confirmed them as Yorkshire’s best team.
Sheffield won the Yorkshire Inter-District Team Championship at Ganton, near York - to add to the Yorkshire league title - and Slack, receiving the trophy on behalf of the team as head of the Sheffield Golf Union, paid tribute to the terrific team spirit engendered by manager Ian Clarke who now stands down after two incredibly successful seasons.
The match was played over 36 holes with all scores counting from the six-man teams. Sheffield eased their way through the field and ran out winners by five shots over Halifax/Huddersfield with East Riding third.
Six shots off leaders East Riding at lunch on 479, Sheffield stepped it up in the afternoon with Clarke all over the course urging on his players.
The team of Jonny McAllister (Tankersley Park), Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay), Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick), Tom Perry (Abbeydale), Sam Young and Dominic Moon (both Rotherham) improved by seven shots in the afternoon.
In a tense finale, Sheffield anchorman Wasteney came in with a classy one under par 72, two shots better than anyone else, and he took the individual prize for the top 36-hole score of 150.
