FULL TIME; SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 2 HARTLEPOOL 2

Owls: Gary Madine in the action this afternoon against Hartlepool.

Owls: Gary Madine in the action this afternoon against Hartlepool.

A LATE equaliser robbed the Owls of a deserved victory after goals from Jermaine Johnson and Gary Madine.

Hartlepool were in trouble towards the end of the first half in which the Owls had made most of the chances, O’Grady passed the ball through to Madine, who was brought down by Hartley as he tried to go down the middle.

There were defenders either side of Hartley so the question centred on whether or not he was the last man. With Owls players and fans hoping for a red card, the referee consulted one of his assistants before showing Hartley a yellow.

Less than two minutes in to the half, the Owls were once more to regret the decision not to send off Hartley. From a right side corner by Horwood in to the middle, Hartley powered in a header that ended up in the roof of the net, though Weaver got a hand to it.

The Owls now faced a test of nerve, finding themselves behind in a game were they had created enough chances to be comfortably in front.

Megson took off Mike Jones who had been disappointing, sent on Ryan Lowe and changed to a 4-3-3 formation with Jermaine Johnson moving to the right side of midfield. It was from this position that substitute Jermaine Johnson scored one of his specials in the 58th minute.

Picking up possession near the half way line, he showed his electric pace in a run down the right, beating first one opponent, then a second from where he smacked a shot in to the far bottom corner.

The visitors escaped yet again when Lowe saw his close range shot stopped by Flinder but the lead that Wednesday had deserved all afternoon arrived in the 75ht minute.

O’Grady challenged for the ball and when it came to Madine, he slammed home a left foot shot from 12 yards out for his 12th goal of the season.

Wednesday could not afford to be too cavalier but were still looking good for a win and perhaps another goal but in the 87th minute, Hartlepool equalised against the run of play with a goalout of the blue.

Sweeney hooked an ambitious effort on the volley from 25 yards out and the ball sailed over Weaver and into the net.

Apart from the battering most teams I have seen us play this year, we have played ok. But it's been our own stupid mistakes, what have cost us. But you cannot stop some flash of brilliance. Such as Charlton free kick or a quality player like Rhodes. However, most of the time it as been our own mistake what have cost us. Falling a sleep and not consentrating and protecting the lead. This we can do something about. We have got to learn to grined out and hold on to a lead. Charlton do this. Thats why Chatlton are top of the league. We need be be more ruthless in front of the goal and see the game out to the end. You would hope with practise and training we can and should have learned from our mistakes. The mistakes we have made are avoidable. Put these mistakes right and I think we are in with a chance. Some will say I am asking to much.

Maybe MM thinks that once Madine has settled back into his goal machine mode & now Buxton is back, we will fall back into that winning rhythm. Maybe we will. I thought we looked better at the back when Lierra came on, would have looked better still with Buxton at right back and Reda still on the pitch and may have looked even better with Mick Jones playing on the right where he has played for Bury. I don't like to see too many players out of position or brought straight in from injury, but we have had to make do for a few games now & are still up there. Although I thought that O'Grady was admired by GM while playing on the left for Rochdale & would prefer to see him there rather than battling with Madine for the ball, but again maybe that is too obvious & Gary hasn't got that much wrong so far. UTFO!

I'm optermistic let's wait and see what the new lad Jones can do. The team have a good fighting spirit and work hard. If we can put a few wins together. Winning builds confidence. If no new players come in. We will have to do our best with what weve got. Hard work, a will to win and playing as a team for each other. Can go a long way. GM will get the best out of the team. If all the players have a athletes mentality. The team will want to win and prove themselves. MM and GM have said they are trying to bring new players in. Just not broadcasting it. We are still in a good position and being positive can help. In the gym if I am focused and done it in my mind. I always have a good workout. If I'm not posative it does. It happen. Life is to short to be negative. Not got the time to be negative or give in. Just do your best and go for it. We can make it happen

well i dont think we can forget about a top two place depending on what happens this month playerwise. but if we are left pinning our hopes on the play offs then im not sure i fancy our chances that much sorry to be negative but if no new faces of quality arrive then surely im only being as negative as MM GM n co....

@ 66 If only it would print that way round..... You know exactly what I mean., I am sick of the if's, what's. when's and maybe's with Weds, We need to be realistic and admit right now WE AREN'T good enough to go up in the top 2 but a lottery 3-6 position is pretty much nailed on.

Evening dudes. I am not surprised to see more posts on here regarding the need for a couple of quality players. We have been patient fans for long enough to know that we are very close this time. The games like Saturday's when we should have taken more points could easily have been swung our way with just a little bit more quality. If I were MM I would look at how much I would lose if we don't go up & spend a touch more to ensure promotion. OK it is not guaranteed, but a little more professionalism at times & we would have more points. Every drawn game could have been won with a touch more quality. A good chunk of them throwing away 2 points by bad finishing, napping & panicky defending. I am enjoying the season, but I can see that four teams could be sharing 53 points soon & the 2nd spot could end up being a lottery UTFO!

Evening all some good posts on here for a change, varied opinion's on how to get out of this league, Charlton have sussed it but didn't they stuggle last season like someone else said got to be a bit more "sav vy" both teams...and steely compared to the last few season's we re playing "silky"football but need a few more breaks as do owls, as for the blackpool quip hmm to close to the knuckel that one...

#62 #57 At last some sensible and constructive discussion on the site , rather than the banal girlish backbiting. To be honest I am not bothered what the "B"s do. Focus on the OWLS, Thats what we are here for. Get some quality, the will to win, being second is the first of the losers.

In my view when we go a goal up we panic we dont close down the strikers are not putting goals away and yes we dont want to pay silly prices for players but then we are still not good enough so we need ship out and replace with quality but still along way to go UP THE OWLS.
