NEIL Mellor says he “can’t believe” his Preston North End teammates would leak tactical information to Sheffield Wednesday following their defeat at Hillsborough.
In various post-match media interviews, Lilywhites manager Graham Westley accused four players of telling the Wednesday camp of their intended team and shape. It is believed that the quartet had been talking to a third party on Friday, who then passed on the information to Wednesday’s coaching staff.
Peter Ridsdale, the Preston chairman, has also backed Westley’s story, saying: “What Graham said after the game on Saturday was true.”
Lilywhites striker Mellor, who had a productive loan spell at Wednesday last season, posted on his Twitter account: “Wasn’t involved with game but can’t believe this story my teammates would leak the team.”
He added: “Thought second half couldn’t get any worse. Another poor result. Not enjoying seeing my teammates losing.”
Ridsdale is determined to draw a line under the ‘Leakgate’ events, insisting: “I’m aware categorically where the information came from, although I don’t think it was done maliciously.
“It’s unfortunate that it happened, but it is time to draw a line under it and move on in order to focus on our game against MK Dons on Saturday.”
