The scene was a play-off second leg and they started two down to Middlesbrough. To further higlight the changing nature of football, Boro gained promotion two years after the club almost closed down.
Chelsea were two down after the first leg, and although they pulled a goal back through Gordon Durie, Boro held on.
Chelsea were roared by their biggest crowd in two years, estimated at 40,000, And they also had some extra help with the injured Micky Hazard making his way to the front of The Shed end to urge the home fans to increase their volume of support.
A happier Chelsea touch 25 years ago was provided by former manager Tommy Docherty, a speaker at the recent Star and Green’Un Football Awards night, who married Mary Brown at Chinley Register Office.
